Dispersion of Air Pollution & Penetration into the Local Environment

Fieldwork 2004

The second field campaign, 19 April - 13 June 2004, has been successfully completed. As before, measurements were centred at Westminster City Council House (WCC), London, NW1, on the intersection of Marylebone Road and Gloucester Place. The DAPPLE in-street instrumentation included 11 ultrasonic anemometers and 14 CO Streetboxes. Most instruments were mounted on street furniture along Marylebone Road between Westminster Council House and Marylebone Road AURN Super-site. Rooftop references were provided by two ultrasonic anemometers on the roof of the Westminster Council House and one on the BT Tower. The field study site map below illustrates the distribution of equipment around the site and further details are given through the links below.

The fixed field measurement equipment was kindly mounted on street furniture by TfL working with the consortium team.

Further details of each component of fieldwork are available in the following sections:

  • Meteorology
  • Background Pollution & Traffic
  • Tracer Release Experiments
  • Exposure Assessment
  • The 2003 and 2004 DAPPLE field campaigns have both been extremely successful and have yielded large data-sets describing traffic movement, pollution levels, flow, dispersion, exposure and tracer behaviour. We are keen to work with with "third parties" in the exploitation of this data, once QA and related activities are complete. Please contact info@dapple.org.uk in the first instance to register an interest and to discuss collaboration possibilities.

Further tracer studies, accompanied by roof top and limited street-level anemometry, are planned for October 2004 - more details will be given nearer the time of the experiments.
