DAPPLE brings together multidisciplinary expertise capable of undertaking fieldwork, wind tunnel and computational simulations to provide a better understanding of the physical processes affecting street and neighbourhood scale flows of air, traffic and people, and their corresponding interactions with the dispersion of pollutants.

Four DAPPLE field campaigns have been successfully completed.

DAPPLE fixed location instrumentation includes ultrasonic anemometers, automatic weather stations and CO Streetboxes. These instruments are mounted on street furniture in and around the intersection between Marylebone Road (between Westminster Council House and Marylebone Road AURN Supersite) and Gloucester Place, courtesy of Transport for London (TfL), on the roof of the WCC House and on the BT Tower. Additional measurements include SCOOT traffic data, measurements within the traffic using the Leeds Instrumented Vehicle, inert tracer release experiments and exposure measurements made by participants passing through the area. Wind Tunnel Modelling

Models of the field site at 1:200 scale are used in wind tunnel work at the Environmental Flow Research Centre (EnFlo), University of Surrey. Wind tunnel modelling has the advantage over field trials of repeatable and controllable wind conditions, making it possible to perform multiple repeat experiments in short time-scales in identical flow conditions. This is impossible in the field - however, important features of the "real world" cannot be reproduced in the wind tunnel, which is why the combined use of field and wind tunnel experimentation is so powerful. Numerical & Analytical Modelling

Computer simulations are undertaken at the University of Cambridge using a suite of models of different complexity (from RANS CFD to simple empirical rules); at the University of Reading using canopy modelling; LES at Imperial College London and traffic modelling at the University of Leeds (ITS). The numerical models address the DAPPLE field and wind tunnel experiments, urban air quality and accidental releases, evaluation of model performance, sensitivity studies and best practice guidelines. Once proven, these computer models can be applied to predict behaviour of pollution in more generalised cases than our initial study site.
